Ralph Lee MBE, MA, MEng, PhD

Associate Faculty for Orthodox Mission

Dr Lee is a former Chemical Engineer, who went to Ethiopia to teach engineering. This led to a deep interest in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and ultimately to his retraining in theology and the study of religion at SOAS University of London. After 16 years living and working in Ethiopia, he now leads research projects on Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Christianity at the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, in partnership with Sankt Ignatios College, Sweden. The current project funded by the Global Formation Project focuses on Ethiopian and Eritrean theological poetry that is used within the traditions to promote spiritual growth and formation. Dr Lee also works on the decade long THEOT (Textual History of the Ethiopic Old Testament Project). He has published widely on Ethiopian Christian thought, especially on the influence of 1Enoch within the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition.
